The statue is the work of sculptor Frančišel Smerdu and has the status of cultural heritage. It was set at its current position in 1948 on the 30th anniversary of Cankar's death. The statue is, according to the Ljubljana municipality priceless, since a mould for the statue does not exist. It is approximately 70cm high and weighs about 80kg.

Frančišek Smerdu (1908-1964) was born in Postojna. He finished the academy in Zagreb in 1932. He was a professor at the Academy for Art in Ljubljana from 1946.
