The globalisation brought, among other things, the establishment of basic universal units of measure, e.g. for weight, length, and time.

In the past there was a lot of confusion in that field, as all larger countries had their own units of measure. The Anglo-Saxon world is still trying to remain an exception, and is still measuring in feet and inches, and drinking beer in pints.

The confusion is even worse as far as monetary units are concerned, as we know only two »global« currencies, dollar and euro, into which the local monetary units are being converted based on the momentary exchange rate, which is rather time-consuming.

With the popularisation of the web several converter software applications became available, allowing precise conversion of units of measure and monetary units, and made the conversion much easier. Now everybody can make the necessary calculations to learn how many pounds make a kilogram, or the actual exchange rate for a Russian rouble, and can avoid being deceived.

A number of converters are available for the users of smart phones which made such applications even more useable. What is a bit unusual is the fact that at the most likable, and best applicable converter for units of measure for Apple mobile phones was created by three young people from Kranj, known as Calumaa.

The marketing of their universal converter Vert in the Apple application web store started in the second week of September, and it became a real success story – it was featured by Apple in the category Best New Apps in 47 countries, and in the category Designed for iOS7 in 19 countries, while in the USA they even got the first and main ad banner, and the first place among the best new applications in the Utilities category. They also received a number of favourable reviews on web portals on technology.

And what makes the Vert converter so special? Mostly it is praised for its innovativeness, likability, and applicability. It also includes more than 900 units of measures in 33 categories, and automatically sets currencies based on the geographical position. The market share of devices based on the Android operation system in the field of smart mobile phones is increasing, but Vert is intended for "apple" phones only. "We'll get to Android sooner or later, but we need a start-up capital," said Andrej Mihelič. The second reason is the fact that the market for iOS devices is very rewarding.

"The principle of application purchases differs. The Apple users are willing to pay a dollar for an application, while Android users generally chose free applications with included advertisements," he added.

Vert is now available for small change; the Apple web store offers it for a dollar, or 89 euro cents. It means that a real profit can be made by selling several ten thousands of the application. Apple and Google take their share for android devices, which amounts to 30 percent.

And the future? The next step will be a converter for iPads, as in their opinion none of the converters made for that device excel. They also intend to "localize" their product, and make it in other languages as well, not only in the English language. They intend to develop some other projects, which are for now only in the phase of ideas.
