For the Kabaj winery, this is the third time it has made the prestigious list, after being ranked among the top 100 in 2013 and 2015.
Last year, the Movia winery, also from the Brda region, joined Kabaj on the list. With eight top 100 finishes, Movia is a record-holder among Slovenian wineries. This year, the winery owned by the charismatic Aleš Kristančič didn't make the list.
The list by Wine & Spirits Magazine includes wineries whose wines performed best at the magazine's wine tastings during the past year.
Morel, who is getting ready to celebrate his fiftieth birthday, has therefore gotten another reason for a toast next week. The inclusion of the winery on the list is the result of many years of hard work and the knowledge he had acquired both in Bordeaux, France, and then in Italy. That's where he married Katja Kabaj from the Brda homestead in 1989 and began to create his own wine empire.
Award-winning wines at competitive prices
These days, the winery boast nine varieties of wine, with an emphasis on Rebula, the Queen of the Brda region. Joining Rebula are Pinot Blanc and Gris, Sauvignon, Merlot (both white and red), while a special place is held by Amfora, a variety of Rebula, Malvasia, and Sauvignass (Friulian Tokaj), which the Kabaj winery macerates in a Georgian kwewri.
Amfora has the highest price among the otherwise affordable Kabaj wines.
The Brda Frenchman exports most of his wines. Particularly important for his are the Asian and, naturally, the U.S markets. The Kabaj homestead keeps on open door policy, meaning that people can stop there for lunch or dinner on weekends. Katja Morel cooks all the dishes with her husband's wines, and if visitors have too much to drink, they can always spend the night at the attractively renovated farmhouse.
