The longest name that appeared at least five times in the Slovenian population consists of thirteen letters; this is the woman's name Maksimilijana and there were 14 Maksimilijanas living in Slovenia on 1 January 2014. The most common female first names were Marija, Ana, Maja and the most common male first names were Franc, Janez, Anton. In the list of top 10 first names only a small change occurred since last year among women’s names: the name Andreja entered the list and replaced the name Frančiška.

The most common family names are, as a year before, Novak, Horvat and Kovačič. There were 379 women named Marija Novak and 213 men named Jožef Horvat living in Slovenia on 1 January 2014. These two combinations of first and family names were most common. The fashion of naming varied The list of the most common names among the population born until the beginning of the 1950s was similar for several decades; the most common first names were Franc, Jožef, Anton, Marija, Ana, and Jožefa. In the 1950s the most popular first names for girls were besides Marija also Majda and Irena. In the 1960s, the name Marija was for the last time the most common name for baby girls. The name Ana disappeared from the list of the top ten most fashionable.

For boys born in that decade the most common first names were Janez and Jože. At the beginning of the 1970s, a change in the tradition of naming children occurred: the most popular first names until that time (Marija, Ana, Franc, Jože, etc.) disappeared and were replaced with names Nataša, Mateja, Boštjan, Andrej, etc. In the 1980s, short first names began to appear mainly among girls (Maja, Nina), while the most fashionable boys’ first names were still long: the most common names were Matej and Marko. In the 1990s, the trend of giving short first names to girls extended to male names, too. The most common names of that period were Luka, Rok, Anja and Nina.

The name Ana ranked among top five again. After 2000, the most popular boy's name has been Luka, and the most popular girl’s name Eva. This period is characterized by very short fist names (Jan, Nejc, Zan, Nik, Nika, Sara, Ana, etc.).
