DARS, the Motorway Company in the Republic of Slovenia is a recurring member on lists of state-owned enterprises that are to be sold off. According to some estimates, the reasons behind this are economic or even purely harmful ones, seeing as those participating in the sale could earn quite a bit of money. Some estimates say the privatization of DARS could be modeled after neighboring Croatia, with those opposing the notion saying the highway is vital for citizens and the economy, and therefore cannot be sold.
The expectation of continuation of the privatization of state-owned enterprises is one of the reasons that the American agency Standard & Poor's upgraded Slovenia’s outlook from negative to stable yesterday.
