The stud farm informs that the mare and her offspring are in good health. Monetaura is brown in colour and has a white star on her forehead. The Lipica Stud Farm expects 19 new foals this year. In past years the number of foals was higher. We asked one of the stud farm officials about the reasons for the lower number of births.
"In recent years, due to the conditions on the market, we have decided to allow only a certain number of mares enough to maintain the farm population’s genetic diversity. We also have only enough mares for the needs of our riding school and less for selling purposes. The number is thus somewhat lower, but we hope this will change in the future."
Monteaura and her mother will spend the next couple of weeks in a safe environment in the delivery unit at the Borjača stables, where all Lipizzaner foals have been coming into this world since the middle of the 19th century. They will be allowed to roam the pastures of the Lipica estate in the second half of May.
The Lipica Stud Farm takes care of 340 Lipizzaner horses. It is considered to be the biggest herd of Lipizzaners in the world.
