They succumbed to their injuries and died at the scene of the accident on the A1 highway between Unec and Ravbarkomanda. Experts say that this is a regular occurrence, but the answer to how exactly the two bears made it onto the highway at all remains a mystery.
The head of the Department for forest animals and hunting in the Postojna regional unit of the Forest Institute, Vladimir Dekleva says that it is a yearly phenomenon. Dekleva also noted that the bear population is quite high and that the normal migration route extends towards the west.
Manager of Slovenian motorways - DARS explained that employees examine guardrails regularly. The guardrails were especially carefully examined after the sleet damaged it last winter. He said reparations were finished by 15 March this year. He noted, however, that safety nets can also get damaged or stolen by people. Wildlife oft roams onto the road in areas where regional roads connect to the highway. DARS has general liability insurance in case of an accident, so any damage compensation is paid for by the insurance company.
