The exhibition showcases a total of 18 photographs. Živulovič’s photo of refugees walking through the outskirts of Brežice (SE) has won this year’s Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography. The exhibition will run until 1 December, 2016.

Photojournalist Srdjan Živulović has dedicated a large part of his career to documenting the plight of refugees. The refugee crisis is not likely to end anytime soon, and this prompted Živulović to showcase his photographs at the AS Gallery in Ljubljana.

Hoping the refugee crisis will end soon
“Reuters sent us the winning photograph. I’m happy and honoured to have won a Pulitzer Prize this year, but I would be even happier if all those refugees could return to their homes,” said Živulović at the opening of the exhibition.

The first series of photographs on display depicts Kurds, the largest ethnic group in the world without an independent state, fleeing into Turkey in 1991. The second series was taken between 1992 and 1994. It depicts the war in Bosnia and Croatia, as well as Bosnian refugees fleeing to Slovenia.

The third series of photos was taken in 2015. It shows refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Africa etc. on their way through Slovenia. The Pulitzer Prize winning photograph is part of the third series. According to Živulović, it was one of the last photographs he took that day.

The first two series are in black and white, while the third series is in colour.
