Verica Trstenjak is a professor of European law at the University of Vienna. She is a former prosecutor general at the Court of Justice of the EU and former judge at the General Court of the European Union.
Trstenjak did not want to comment her withdrawal. She said that Marko Ilešič is a good candidate and has no doubts as to his quality. In the letter she sent to the Speaker of the National Assembly she wrote that she decided to withdraw her candidacy because of the current state in Slovenia. She wrote that Slovenia was not progressive or modern enough for its relevant institutions to back an individual with an international reputation, who is a female, or would they give priority to youth. She did write though that both candidates were professionals.
There is now only one candidate for the position. MPs will decide on the judge at tomorrow's session. The voting process will be secret and thus unpredictable. The candidate will need at least 46 votes to be elected judge.
