The reason for the makeover lies under the earth – the whole municipal infrastructure has been renovated and all of the electric and telephone cables will run under the ground.
Vipavski Križ is one of the most beautiful medieval Slovenian places completely protected as a heritage monument. All the construction work was therefore even more demanding under the strict supervision of architectural heritage officials. Once the work was completed, Harij Bat, the president of the local community, was pleased with the result: "The entire place literally lived in a construction zone. All the village streets, the entire main square, everything was dug up. We, the residents of Križ, were really patient. And a lot of praise also goes to all the workers, who really put in a lot of effort."
The main reason for the makeover lies under the new stone pavers - an almost one kilometer long faecal sewage system and 766 meters of rain water sewerage have been put in place. Every single house in Vipavski Križ is connected to the system. More than 600 meters of water pipelines have been replaced and two and half kilometers of additional connecting pipelines have been constructed. All the waste water from Vipavski Križ and the neighbouring hamlets is now connected to a new waste water purification plant with 700 units.
Bat is convinced that the town’s new image will give it a new momentum, especially awakening its tourist potentials: "Even now Križ is visited by more than 400 full buses a year. It is true that we have many architectural, memorial and historical landmarks, but we have to make it possible for our guests to also have a rest, quench their thirst and eat. We have no restaurant in Križ, we have no shop offering souvenirs or other handicraft products characteristic for Križ. For this, we “Križani” have to roll up our sleeves."
The residents of Križ, truly proud of their town’s and region’s history, organize the Kriške semanje dneve (Križ fair days) every year. But as you’ve already missed this year’s event, you’re still invited to two more events that will take place this year. One of them takes place for Christmas, when they prepare the Christmas story - Live nativity scenes. The “Christmas story” and live nativity scenes unfold before your eyes in the open, in the garden monastery, and along the narrow streets or “gasah”, as they are more popularly known by the locals.
