The young florists have created the largest carpet made of flowers symbolizing intergenerational ties, respect, and peace ever made, led by their mentor dr. Sabina Šegula. Šegula is known to the public for her floral decoration, created in cooperation with her colleague Peter Ribič, of the St. Peter's basilica, the largest in Vatican.
Within the blossoming carpet the logotype of the Grandparents's Day can is recognizable, surrounded by a colourful rainbow made of flowers. The carpet covers 107 square meters, and is twice as large as the one made last year of 50 square metres; including symbols of peace – birds from all the five continents.
The realisation of the project was possible thanks to two sponsors: Slovenian company Smithers Oasis, which contributed floral foams for fresh flowers for the entire surface of the carpet, and Arboretum Volčji Potok, which contributed all the other material required. 30 young creators started by spreading foil on the surface of the chosen location; after distributing floral foams they took a walk through the floral park of Volčji Potok. They picked approximately 25,000 flowers, and arranged them into floral foams, following the previously drawn design. The work took approximately 1,000 hours.
Once the carpet was completed, the children from the Janko Kersnik elementary school from Brdo near Lukovica visited the Arboretum, they joined hands and encircled the carpet, and afterwards they made bunches of flowers to give as a present to their grandparents.
The creators of the carpet believe that the moist floral foam will keep the flowers of the carpet fresh for two to three weeks, until the Grandparents Day. This day should be the day of intergenerational socializing and shared pleasure for both the young and the older population. The young should remember grandparents, give them flowers to show gratitude for everything they had done for us, and have fun together.
