The cross-country afforestation campaign entitled Let's Spring Forests has taken place at six locations across Slovenia, namely in Kočevje, Ravnik pri Logatcu, Lovrenc na Pohorju, Ribnica na Pohorju, Trnovo in the Nova Gorica municipality and Podkraj nad Ajdovščino.
A total of more than 400 volunteers took part in the event, surpassing the expectations of the organizers. There were about 170 volunteers who came to plant forest trees in Kočevje, among them larger groups of scouts. At the two locations on Pohorje there were about 90 volunteers, more than 80 in Logatec, and around 80 people at the Trnovo and Podkraj locations. By planting trees, each contributed to the preservation of forests for future generations. Around 10,000 hectares of forest trees were planted covering an area of about five hectares of forests – spruce, larch, beech, mountain maple, cherry and mountain ash. The most extensive action took place in Kočevje, where about 3,100 young trees were planted, and on the two locations on Pohorje, where 3,200 seedlings were afforested. 1,500 plants were planted at Ravnik pri Logatcu, while 2,100 seedlings were put into soil in Trnovo and Podkraj.
"Forests need our help because of natural disasters, although they help themselves in the long run. Today, we will try to contribute to the restoration of forests and nature conservation," said President Borut Pahor, who helped with the planting of young trees in Kočevje.
