It looks as a harmless mass of ice, but climbers consider it a real gem. Only the bravest dare to approach it, with the due respect for nature which created this wonder during cold days and nights.

"We have three rather vertical waterfalls in Carinthia, and this is one of them. We call it Žerjavska sveča (Crane candle)," the alpinist Grega Lačen says.

Frozen waterfalls are easily accessible in our area. But the climbers must estimate the safety of ice by themselves. "Those waterfalls are suitable for climbing when the temperature remains below zero, at minus five or ten degrees, for a longer period of time. The best quality of the ice is after severe cold lessens a bit," Lačen explains.

Waterfall ice climber Andrej Jež adds: "The terrain is slightly different every time. You can never tell how long the waterfall will hold. Actually, we check the temperatures at home, and once we get below the waterfall, we check the situation on site – we check the type of ice, and only then decide whether it is suitable for climbing or not."

For now, the ice sculptures made by nature are still stable. According to weather forecasts, the adrenaline seeking climbers will be able to enjoy in climbing the frozen waterfalls until the end of the month.
