The Nutrition Institute presented its selection of the most innovative foods produced in Slovenia. All the products were launched last year – from December 2014 onwards. "As to the process we first graded each product according to its nutritional content, the amount of sugar, salt and fat it contained. We also assessed how beneficial the product was to a person's health and how much fibre and other bioactive substances it contained. All the foodstuff with favourable grades then advanced to the next round. We then assessed their various innovative aspects – from conveniency, packaging and taste to its intended way of use, target population and long-term contribution to help people choose healthier foodstuff," said Anita Kušar, the head of the project from the Nutrition Instistute, describing the selection procedure.
"Very often domestic producers lack funds for advertising and are not able to present the advantages of their innovative foodstuff to consumers. Sales therefore fail to provide for profitable production. In order to better present the newly launched foods that stand out and to support innovation in the food industry, the Nutrition Institute has once again prepared a selection of the most innovative foodstuff in Slovenia," is how the institute explained the idea behind the project.
Six top foods were selected in six categories. Those are the Spar spelt bread with chestnuts, the Enemon wheat bran with rye, Pečjak's dried pasta Pure, MU Smoothie and the Tuš Slovenian Potica cake from its Slovenske dobrote line. A special prize for innovation in offering local foodstuff went to Eta Kamnik for its line of pre-packaged fresh vegetables Grunt. There were no meat products among this year's most innovative foods as there was only one meat entry, which was therefore left without any competition. There were also no beverages in the selection as organizers did not receive any quality applications for drinks.
