During the crisis the state has substantially reduced employments, and also promotions within the public administration. Yet some exceptions have been made, including employment of top Slovenian athletes in the Army, the Police, and the financial administration (former Customs Office), making it easier for the chosen athletes to cover their living expenses and dedicate themselves to sport. This is even more important for athletes practicing sport disciplines with rather small rewards for the achievements.
At times employment of athletes by public administration is criticised, primarily by those athletes who fulfil the conditions for employment, but remain for years on the waiting list, and those who have lost the jobs given by the state due to poor results. The newest case was the rejection of employment of this year's world champion in judo Tina Trstenjak by the Slovenian Armed Forces due to insufficient education; she has not graduated from high school.
The condition for employment of athletes in Public Administration is their status of a categorized world-class or international-class athlete, taking into consideration their achievements in the last year. The second condition must be fulfilled as well, namely their education must be adequate for the job they will officially perform, e.i. the job of a policeman or soldier.
