Magna Steyr isn’t providing much information about its expansion plants. The car giant recently signed new business deals with BMW and Jaguar Land Rover and extended its contracts with Mercedes Benz. As a result, it is facing a shortage of personnel and space.
It is difficult to determine whether the company is being secretive about a business plan to move a part of the production to Maribor or is merely considering potential locations. The company has stated only that it is thinking about expanding its production facilities, but that the decision will depend on the needs of the customers and that it is too early for them to comment on specific plans.
A major player in the automotive industry
Magna Steyr, which is a part of Magna International, is one of the most important suppliers in the car industry and employs some 6000 people. It manufactures chassis, car seats, electronics, powertrains and other car parts. The entire group, which has annual revenues exceeding 26 billion dollars, employs 152,000 people.
If the best-case scenario - a part of Magna’s automotive pie moving to Maribor - doesn’t come true, limited solace could be found in the fact that Magna needs approximately 3000 new employees and that Slovenian workers will be welcome on the other side of the border.
