Slovenia, which is dealing with devastating floods, has requested the EU to activate its Civil Protection Mechanism for the country.

According to European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič from Slovenia, the list of needs compiled by Slovenia has already been sent to the EU member states. PM Robert Golob said that Slovenia had also asked other countries to help with helicopter transports.

The situation is worst in Carinthia and in Zgornja Savinja valley, where most roads remain closed due to landslides, and many places inaccessible. However, a convoy of military vehicles has managed to reach the previously inaccessible towns of Mežica and Črna in northern Carinthia.

Meanwhile, the focus has now turned to landslides as heavy rain has completely soaked the soil. But new storms were again set to bring significant rainfall in the afternoon, including hail, starting in the northwest and moving eastwards.

In eastern Slovenia, where a levee on the Mura River developed a ten-metre break last night, the situation was said to be under control.

On Monday, a special application will be launched, collecting all the information to help those affected.

Aid is already coming to Slovenia from abroad. Trucks loaded with food and other humanitarian aid have left Poland and Hungary today.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross has warned that it is currently not collecting material aid, as it is too early to start the distribution. While, Slovenian Caritas is looking for clean-up volunteers.
