Benjamin Šeško opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 16th minute.

Konrad Laimer of Austria equalised from play 12 minutes later.

Afterwards, Slovenian manager Matjaž Kek and his Austrian counterpart Ralf Rangnick agreed that a draw was a fair result. Rangnick praised Slovenia's defence but said that his team had been more active in the second half and had been looking for a winner late in the game.

Kek added that he was sure that Slovenia would make it to the World Cup finals in America in 2026 and that his team would have lost such a fixture in the past.

At 22nd in the world, Austria are the highest ranked team in the group. Norway are 50th, just two places ahead of Slovenia, with Kazakhstan in 109th place in the FIFA World Rankings.

Slovenia's next match will be at home to Kazakhstan on Monday evening.
