The Ljubljana Marathon weekend got underway yesterday with races for children. The first event was the Lumpi run for preschoolers, followed by races for 1st to 5th graders and 6th to 9th graders.

Yesterday's events for the young were completed when 778 secondary school pupils took on longer distances. In total, just under 8,200 children were involved in Saturday's races.

This morning, 13,044 runners from a record 86 countries set off from the starting line.

The 10 km race began at 8 a.m., with the 21 and 42 km races starting at 9.20 a.m.

Slovenia's Vid Botolin and Klara Lukan won the men's and women's 10 km races, respectively.

The half-marathon was also won by young Slovenian runners, with victory going to 22-year olds, Jakob Medved and Liza Šajn.

Joyce Chepkemoi Tele won the main event in lovely sunny conditions. The best Slovenian was Anja Fink Malenšek in 6th place. Slovenian runners rounded out the top ten places in the women's race.

The men's title went to Getaneh Molla Tamire of Ethiopia in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 29 seconds.

Primož Kobe broke the Slovenian men's record for the Ljubljana marathon by one second when finishing in 8th place. The next two places also went to Slovenian runners.
