Dave apparently has a shot at his first job in Slovenia. Today he practiced new Slovenian words… NATAKAR - BARTENDER, BI KAJ SPIL - WOULD YOU LIKE SOMETHING TO DRINK, POGREŠATI - TO MISS SOMETHING, SE UČIM - I AM LEARNING, ENOSTAVNO - EASY, POVEJ - TELL ME, PRIČAKOVANJE - EXPECTATION, PLAČILO – PAYMENT, and Dave will get his first 6 euro NA URO – PER HOUR starting tomorrow :)
Dave almost blew his first chance to find a job. But he practiced Slovene words again… ZAPRTO - CLOSED, ČISTILKA - CLEANER, ŠEF - BOSS, SLUŽBA - JOB, SEDI - SIT DOWN, ČAKAJ – WAIT, POL ŠTIRIH - HALF PAST THREE, PREPOZEN - TOO LATE, JEZEN - ANGRY, STAVITI - LET’S BET, VSO SREČO - GOOD LUCK… We will soon learn how successful Dave was in the interview…
Slovenians are “krasni ljudje”, or wonderful, splendid people, who do like to have their little talks or CHATS, known as KLEPETI. Because, when you do have these CONVERSATIONS – POGOVORI, or as Fani described them – “little pogovori”, you find out things about other people, and their NEIGHBOUR - SOSED, GRADMOTHER - BABICA, GRANDFATHER – DEDEK, SON – SIN, DAUGHTER – HČERKA, BROTHER – BRAT, SISTER – SESTRA, COUSIN – BRATRANEC for a male or SESTRIČNA for a female cousin, their NEPHEW – NEČAK or NEČAKINJA, AUNT - TETA, and UNCLE - STRIC. And need we stress again, they’re all “krasni ljudje”.
Spring gives Dave new energy. Also for learning Slovenian. Today he learned that VELIKA NOČ means EASTER, KOKOŠJA JAJCA are CHICKEN EGGS, BARVATI is TO PAINT, POMLAD is SPRING, JAGNJETINA is LAMB, PREKAJENA ŠUNKA – SMOKED HAM, MESAR is BUTCHER, HLEB is LOAF, KRUŠNA PEČ is BREAD OVEN, HREN is HORSE RADISH, OBLAČILA are CLOTHES, ŽEGEN is EASTER BLESSING… and Dave can hardly wait for the end of LENT – POSTNI ČAS :)
Today Dave learned some new words: ŽIVAL means ANIMAL, GOZD is FOREST, LISICA is FOX, MEDVED is BEAR, VEVERICA is SQUIRREL, VOLK is WOLF, ZAJEC is RABBIT, and DIVJA SVINJA is WILD PIG (WILD BOAR). There’s no end in view for Dave’s challenge… :)
And that was Dave’s first sight-seeing trip to Ljubljana with his LOVED ONE - his LJUBLJENA. Fani showed him the TROMOSTOVJE - the TRIPLE BRIDGE, the LJUBLJANSKI GRAD - LJUBLJANA CASTLE, and Dave did enjoy being around the inhabitants of Slovenia’s capital, the LJUBLJANČANI, and their prettier half, the LJUBLJANČANKE.
Today Dave learned some new words – WAITER is NATAKAR, JOB is DELO, PIVNICA is BAR, CV is ŽIVLJENJEPIS, RAZGOVOR ZA DELO is JOB INTERVIEW, KAVA is COFFEE and SLADKOR is SUGAR. He still needs some more Slovene words, but he’ll get there…
Fani and Dave won’t eat potica today because Dave didn’t learn the ingredients, but he learned some new words... CHRISTMAS is BOŽIČ, EASTER is VELIKA NOČ, DOUGH is TESTO and STUFFING is NADEV. He also learned FLOUR is MOKA, YEAST is KVAS, WALNUTS are OREHI and POPPY is MAK.
Today Dave learned that HVALA means THANK YOU and SLADKOR means SUGAR, but that you can’t use it for your significant other.

Fani expected Dave to book a double room – a dvoposteljna soba, but Dave booked a room with a pograd, which is a bunk bed. So remember, a SINGLE ROOOM is ENOPOSTELJNA SOBA, a DOUBLE ROOM is DVOPOSTELJNA SOBA, and if you're ever planning a romantic weekend – never book a room with a POGRAD – a BUNK BED ;)
Well then, that was Dave’s first introduction to Kekec, a Slovenian cultural icon and the story of a brave boy – a fearless shepherd from the Slovene highlands, who went up to the mountains to find a cure for his blind little sister. That’s Kekec. And by now, I think all of us have already learned that SLOVENIA is called SLOVENIJA, right? Dave’s home country IRELAND is called IRSKA, and FRANCE is called… FRANCIJA.
Today Dave learned new words – COTTAGE CHEESE is SKUTA, MOUNTAIN is GORA, CHAIR is STOL, and TABLE is MIZA.
Today Dave learned that GOLD is ZLATO and SILVER is SREBRO. STO is a HUNDRED, SREČA is LUCK, and VSO SREČO is GOOD LUCK.
Today Dave learned some of the Prekmurje dialect and a lot of new words - BABICA is GRANDMOTHER, DEDEK is GRANDFATHER, MOJE IME is MY NAME, DOBRO JUTRO is GOOD MORNING, LEPE is NICE, OČI are EYES, VPRAŠATI is TO ASK, PITI is TO DRINK, TI is YOU, JAZ is ME, ŽGANJICA is BRANDY, PRIJATELJSTVO is FRIENDSHIP and PRIJAZEN is TO BE KIND.
Dave learned about what a ŠTRUČKA is. And how hard it can be to get one with ŠUNKA – HAM and SIR - CHEESE.
Today Dave learned that DOBRODOŠLI means WELCOME, DVE PIVI means TWO BEERS, ŠE ENA RUNDA means ANOTHER ROUND and LAHKO RAČUN means CAN I GET THE BILL? Oh, and Fani learned that CRAIC is FUN... at least in Ireland anyway.
Thanks to Dave’s bad Slovene he just avoided a fine. But he learned some new words: POLICEMAN – POLICIST, FINE – KAZEN, DOCUMENTS – DOKUMENTI, FAST – HITRO.
And that’s how Dave struggled with his ELBOW or KOMOLEC, and learned new words like KOŽA – SKIN, and BOLI – HURTS.
