Erjavec believes that Slovenia should pay more attention to security issues. “Security is an issue we can no longer take for granted. We can no longer maintain the illusion that we live in a safe world,” he said. Within NATO, security is based on mutual solidarity, according to Erjavec. Therefore, Slovenia must first meet its financial obligations to NATO. Erjavec also said that Slovenia should provide more funding for police and intelligence agencies.
Erjavec said that the most pressing international issues include the Ukrainian and Syrian crisis, the waves of migrants in Europe, and the security conditions in Afghanistan. He added that Slovenia will feel the effects of the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, as a large proportion of refugees comes from Afghanistan. At the ministerial, the NATO ministers decided to extend their military advisory mission in Afghanistan. The seven troops Slovenia has stationed in Afghanistan are to remain there.
