Fahrenheit made a liquid thermometer with alcohol, and later the first mercury thermometer and he calibrated with two permanent temperature points with melting point at 32 degrees F., and boiling point of 212 degrees F.

In 1890 English crime writer Agatha Christie was born. She is best remembered for the detective novels and short story collections with Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple.

In 1946 American director Oliver Stone is born.

In 1947 the Treaty of Peace with Italy and 21 countries, including with Yugoslavia, came into force. The treaty was signed by 10 countries in February of the same year; following the conclusions of the Peace Conference in Paris, the Primorska region was annexed to Primorska Slovenia. In the area of Trieste and part of northern Istria, the Free Territory of Trieste was established.

In 1978 German aircraft designer Wilhelm Emil "Willy" Messerschmitt dies in Munich. He built a fast passenger aircraft Typhoon and a number of fighter aircraft.

In 1984 the second son of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, Prince Harry of Wales, is born.
