e of speed. Their intention is to encourage drivers to drive carefully and safely.
Only in the last month and a half 32 people died on the Slovenian roads, 16 of those in traffic accidents caused by speeding. In summer the speed of driving is usually higher due to favourable weather conditions, and it is appropriate that the European traffic police network is preparing preventive campaigns in summer period, like the speed campaign which will be performed this week.
Robert Vehovec from the General Police Directorate hopes that policemen will get more equipment for catching the speeding drivers, also due to the unfavourable statistics. Yet equipment alone won't make the difference; additional policemen should be present and seen on our roads.
Unfortunately speeding and driving under influence of alcohol are directly connected to the expectations of drivers to get caught doing it. The unfavourable statistics must be understood as a reminder that traffic safety is not self-evident, and not guaranteed by heavy fines.
