Dave and Fani were on the hunt for a PRAM or OTROŠKI VOZIČEK today. Fani found a perfect one in a BABY STORE or OTROŠKA TRGOVINA. It had 3 parts... first the LUPINICA or BABY CARRIER, then a KOŠARA ZA DOJENČKA or a BABY BASKET, and also a ŠPORTNI DEL or SPORTS PART. Of course, it also had a SENČNIK – PARASOL and a POKRIVALO ZA DEŽ - RAIN COVER. But seeing the price Dave thought it would be best to think it through and maybe buy a used pram for a smaller price, which led to Fani calling him a ŠKRTUN or SKOPUH – a STINGY person…
Many couples can't agree that quickly. Dave also learned some new words: MOŠKO IME is MALE NAME, ŽENSKO IME is FEMALE NAME. IZVOR means ORIGIN, ŽREB is A DRAW, ZAUPATI - TO CONFIDE IN, NIZEK TREBUH is LOW BELLY. And yet, in the end, the ULTRAZVOK – ULTRASOUND will determine what the child's name will be.
Our merry couple had their FIRST APPOINTMENT AT THE GYNECOLOGIST or PRVI OBISK PRI GINEKOLOGU after the PREGNANCY TEST or TEST NOSEČNOSTI. First they had a POSVET or TALK about the following topics: ZGODOVINA KRONIČNIH BOLEZNI – HISTORY OF CHRONICAL ILLNESSES in the family, POTRDITEV VIŠINE NOSEČNOSTI – CONFIRMING THE STAGE OF PREGNANCY, and also ZAPLETI V NOSEČNOSTI or the POSSIBLE RISKS/COMPLICATIONS IN PREGNANCY. Dave and Fani also had to fill out a QUESTIONNAIRE or VPRAŠALNIK, and Fani also had to GIVE BLOOD AND URINE - DATI KRI IN URIN. She also got a MATERNITY BOOKLET - MATERINSKA KNJIŽICA, which Fani has to carry with her DURING PREGNANCY – MED NOSEČNOSTJO and AT GIVING BIRTH - PRI PORODU.
As Fani counts the money… I mean pieces of PASTA – TESTENINE, let's see what new words they've uncovered today. CAREFULLY is PREVIDNO, ČESEN is GARLIC, DARILO is a PRESENT or GIFT, OKVIR is a FRAME, and VRČ is a JAR. Aunt Tončka was really GENEROUS – RADODARNA with her thoughtful gift, which Fani is now about TO BOIL – SKUHATI/ZAVRETI for supper. Except for the BANKNOTES – BANKOVCI, of course. Dober tek Dave & Fani!
So, our couple is starting a new chapter in life! Now they know why Fani was acting STRANGE – ČUDNO this day. The SCALE – TEHTNICA is not BROKEN – POKVARJENA and there are actually HORMONES – HORMONI causing trouble. Fani is PREGNANT – NOSEČA. The PREGNANCY TEST – TEST NOSEČNOSTI confirmed it. She is also very happy about it, but in the next second also very worried about it… well, those are hormones...
Poor Dave's attempts TO PRACTICE – VADITI his French TO IMPRESS – NAREDITI VTIS on Fani didn't work out as he planned. C'est la vie! Maybe he should stick to Slovenian. Well, he did learn a few new words this evening. LOK is an ARCH, ZMAGA is VICTORY, POLJE is A FIELD, MOST is A BRIDGE and STOLP is A TOWER. He didn't eat any SNAILS – POLŽEV, or FROGS LEGS – ŽABJIH KRAKOV in France, but he did see the Mona Lisa - despite the QUEUE - VRSTA. All in all, it was a VERY ROMANTIC HONEYMOON - ZELO ROMANTIČEN MEDENI TEDEN, in THE CITY OF LOVE - V MESTU LJUBEZNI.
Dave learned some new Slovene words. TO FALL DOWN THE STAIRS means PASTI DOL PO STOPNICAH, CLUMSY is NERODEN, a SAFE HOUSE is VARNA HIŠA, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE is DRUŽINSKO NASILJE, and MODRICE are BRUISES.
So, as Dave & Fani get started clearing out their old stuff, or JUNK - KRAMA, let's look at what new things Dave has learned about life in Slovenia today. OBČINA is the MUNICIPALITY, ODLAGALIŠČE is the MUNICIPAL DUMP, KAVNA MIZICA is a COFFEE TABLE, OBVESTILO is an ANNOUNCEMENT, OKVIR is a FRAME, and ZMENEK is a DATE. Now, Dave & Fani have a date PUTTING THINGS ON A PILE - ZLOŽITI STVARI NA KUP, outside their apartment block.
TO CROSS THE ROAD – PREČKATI CESTO can be DANGEROUS – NEVARNO. You have to look to the LEFT – LEVO and RIGHT – DESNO, before using the PEDESTRIAN CROSSING – PREHOD ZA PEŠCE. Dave is a VOLUNTEER – PROSTOVOLJEC today, helping children cross the road. He also learned that a PAVEMENT is a PLOČNIK, VEHICLES are VOZILA, TO WAVE is MAHATI, TO WAIT is ČAKATI and STOP is, well, STOP.
TO NE MOREŠ VERJETI – YOU CAN’T BELIEVE IT, but Dave and Fani are indeed spending their HONEYMOON – MEDENI TEDEN in Paris, and they’ll probably need more than one day to see all the sights, including all the MUSEUMS – MUZEJI, CATHEDRALS – KATEDRALE, PALACES – PALAČE and SHOPS – TRGOVINE. But they started the day off with a stop at a local BAKERY – PEKARNA, and Dave wants to finish it by going SKINNY DIPPING – KOPATI SE NAG in the RIVER – REKA.
Dave and Fani are PACKED – SPAKIRANA and READY – PRIPRAVLJENA. They have one SUITCASE – KOVČEK, two CARRY-ON BAGS – ROČNI PRTLJAGI, two PASSPORTS – POTNA LISTA and two RETURN PLANE TICKES – POVRATNI LETALSKI KARTI to Paris, France. Dave and Fani can’t wait for the adventure to begin.
The DROUGHT – SUŠA has come to an end and it’s RAINING – DEŽUJE. Dave and Fani are not SWEATY – PREPOTENA anymore. CLOUDS - OBLAKI have brought RAIN - DEŽ and luckily no STORMS – NEVIHTE nor HAIL – TOČA. Dave said he heard on the NEWS – POROČILA that what’s happening is the result of CLIMATE CHANGE – PODNEBNE SPREMEMBE.
