SECOND HAND 18. & 21. 5. - EMF - UNBELIVEABLE / THE SOUL SEARCHERS - ASHLEY'S ROACHCLIP

21.05.2016

Hello and welcome to Second hand the show that brings you background information on well- known hits. Today we focus on a song that is already 25 years old but that you've probably not forgotten. The band EMF from England has released three albums during their run. Their first album called Schubert Dip, has been the most successful. The name of the album, as songwriter Ian Dench explained in an interview, was If ever he is short of a chord sequence he nicks one from Schubert. The song Unbelievable was the band's biggest hit. It reached number three in the UK charts and it even topped the charts in the US which is a huge success for an indie production. We find two samples in this song. One of the samples is of US comedian Andrew Dice Clay it is the exclamation of "oh!" at the start of each chorus along with the words "it's unbelievable". Funk Legend Chuck Brown is responsible for the rhythm in the background. He played with the band The Soul Searchers. Chuck was also called "the Godfather of Go-go" that was a subgenre of funk music in the Washington DC. area. His biggest hits were I Need some Money and Bustin' Loose. In 2012 Chuck died at the age of 76. At the age of 74 he released the album We Got This and in 2014 Chuck's final recordings were released posthumously on the album Beautiful Life.

Second hand looks at the trend of recycling existing music in the form of samples, remixes and covers - although sometimes these modifications are actually flagrant violations of copyright laws... Some artists use without acknowledging where they got it, so we decided to take a closer look. The result: a huge number of hits are credited to the wrong musician, while the people who really wrote it remain ignored. Listen to the original and the adaptation and familiarize yourself with what's going on in the music industry - you'll be surprised by how many of your idols have built their reputation on the shoulders of others.
