According to data from Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research, there have been almost 85 000 fires in the Amazon so far this year, an increase of over 80 percent over the same time period last year.
However, some argue that this year’s fire season is not particularly different from others. According to NASA, as of Aug 16, total fire activity across the Amazon basin was close to average over the past 15 years.
