Nova Gorica will be Europe's Capital of Culture in 2025. Nova Gorica decided to share the culture capital project with Italy's Gorizia. The mayors of both cities watched the live streaming of the announcement together at the shared Europe Square. Nova Gorica and Gorizia have a long-running history of cooperation, and the bid has enjoyed undivided political support in both cities. The mayor of Nova Gorica, Klemen Miklavič, said Europe would be watching and that Nova Gorica, together with Gorizia, would like to show that it is important to be connected and grow together. The EU’s annual Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought was on Wednesday awarded to the Belarusian democratic opposition. In its award statement, the parliament cited 10 opposition figures, including the main opposition candidate Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Nobel laureate author Svetlana Alexievich. The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, named after Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, was created in 1988 to honor individuals or groups who defend human rights and fundamental freedoms.
