Last Friday, women's rights activists protested outside a Paris concert hall where this year's Cesar awards ceremony took place. They were denouncing the 12 nominations for Polish-French director Roman Polanski's film An Officer and a Spy, which won a total of three awards, including best director. Several actresses walked out of the awards ceremony.

SPOTLIGHT - Faster trains between Ljubljana and Maribor

Infrastructure Minister Alenka Bratušek announced faster train connection between Slovenia's two biggest cities, Ljubljana and Maribor. The journey currently takes between 2 and 3 hours. Minister Bratušek said that next autumn the travel time would be cut down to 1 hour and 30 minutes, once the renovation of the railway sections is complete and the Slovenian Railway company received its new trains.

There are around 1500 deaf people who use the Slovenian sign language in Slovenia, around 450 people, who have a cochlear implant, around 100, who are deaf-blind and use sign language and around 75.000 people with hearing aids.

SPOTLIGHT: The Amazon fires have pushed Brazil to the forefront of international conversations

According to data from Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research, there have been almost 85 000 fires in the Amazon so far this year, an increase of over 80 percent over the same time period last year. However, some argue that this year’s fire season is not particularly different from others. According to NASA, as of Aug 16, total fire activity across the Amazon basin was close to average over the past 15 years.

New mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio claimed 31 lives and injured dozens more over the weekend. Following the shootings, Former US President Barack Obama called on Americans to reject language from any of their leaders that feeds a climate of fear and hatred or normalizes racist sentiments. While he did not name names, it was implied that his statement was about President Donald Trump.

On Monday, we marked Overshoot day - the date when humanity's annual demand on nature exceeded when our planet can renew in the whole year. Over the past 20 years, the date has moved up three months to July 29, the earliest ever. If everyone spent natural resources the way we do in Slovenia, Earth would reach overshoot day on April 27th. The first of six intercultural days - socializing events in which people get to know other foreign cultures - was held in Maribor last week. The purpose is to introduce locals to other cultures and people with a refugee status in Slovenia.
