Dave prepares for the day at the ORGANIC FARM – EKOLOŠKA KMETIJA. He needs OLD CLOTHES – STARA OBLAČILA and RUBBER BOOTS – GUMIJASTI ŠKORNJI. He can’t go BAREFOOT - BOS. He’s practicing some new words like ŽIVINOREJA - LIVESTOCK FARMING, SAMOOSKRBA is SELF-SUFFICIENCY, ZELENJAVNI VRT – VEGETABLE GARDEN, KOZA - GOAT, KOKOŠ - CHICKEN and he already knows that a VINSKA KLET is a WINE CELLAR.
There are a lot of TREES - DREVESA in Slovenia. In fact, 64% of Slovenia is covered by forests. And today Dave learned that the WOODS or FOREST is called a GOZD. Also, HRAST is OAK, BUKEV is BEECH, LIPA is LINDEN, BREZA – BIRCH, BOR – PINE, SMREKA is SPRUCE, LUBJE is BARK and a NEVESTA is a BRIDE.
Dave arrived at the GAS or PETROL STATION – BENCINSKA ČRPALKA with a “bomba”. But he didn’t have a real bomb with him. A PLINSKA BOMBA is another word for what Slovene’s call PLINSKA JEKLENKA or GAS CYLINDER. Fani likes using GAS – PLIN for making her COFFEE – KAVA, and not ELECTRICITY – ELEKTRIKA, which she says is EXPENSIVE – DRAGA.
Dave has had an enjoyable time at the FONTANA PIVA ŽALEC – ŽALEC BEER FOUNTAIN! He has learned the words for... TO GO ON A TRIP – ITI NA IZLET, A GLASS – KOZAREC, GLASSES/SPECTACLES – OČALA, ARE YOU OK? – SI V REDU?, THE BEST – NAJBOLJŠI, OPTIKA – OPTICIAN, DRUNK – PIJAN, and YOU ARE IN TROUBLE! – TI SI V TEŽAVAH!
The week didn't start off so well for Dave. He was “in the doghouse” or IN TROUBLE - V TEŽAVAH with Fani because he forgot to go to the CINEMA – KINO with her. He was a bit SERIOUS - RESEN today. Thankfully, Jakob's ADVICE – NASVET over a DRAUGHT BEER – TOČENO PIVO helped him out. Dave learned that KAJ TE MUČI? means WHAT’S BOTHERING YOU? and NE ZASPI is DON’T FALL ASLEEP. He also learned that MAKING A MOUNTAIN OUT OF A MOLEHILL is DELA SLONA IZ MUHE, and that ON THE HOUSE/FOR FREE is BREZPLAČNO. Thankfully, Fani FORGAVE HIM – OPROSTILA MU JE…this time.
Dave really can be PERSISTANT - VZTRAJEN. But not for the right DESICION – ODLOČITEV. Anyway, today he learned some new words, which means he is persistent when it comes to learning Slovene. DEJA VU is PRIVID, to BE SURE is BITI PREPRIČAN, a LIGHT DINNER is LAHKA VEČERJA, a KILO or KILOGRAM is KILOGRAM and to LOOSE WEIGHT means SHUJŠATI.
Dave had a pretty interesting day. HIS CAR GOT STOLEN – AVTO SO MU UKRADLI. Well actually, NOT FOR REAL – NE ZARES. HE MEMORIZED – ZAPOMNIL SI JE the wrong parking number. The SECURITY GUARD – VARNOSTNIK helped him solve the situation and the POLICE - POLICIJA was also involved. Eventually, he did get the car back as well as a pair of BRAND NEW TROUSERS – ČISTO NOVE HLAČE.
It started off with a conversation about our PLANET EARTH – PLANET ZEMLJA, the SUN – SONCE, the MOON – LUNA, STARS – ZVEZDE and our SOLAR SYTEM – OSONČJE. Then they stumbled on to the topic of ALIENS – VESOLJCI, UFOs – NLP-ji… And what followed next was an out-of-this-world experience… :) ?
It's really amazing how Dave gains knowledge at every turn. Today he learned new words at the FARM - KMETIJA: LIPA is LINDEN TREE, ČAJ is TEA, SESTRIČNA means FEMALE COUSIN, ZAROČENEC is FIANCE, HLEV is BARN, KRAVE MOLZNICE are DAIRY COWS, KOKOŠ is CHICKEN, JAJCA are EGGS, ZAJEC is RABBIT, SENCA is SHADOW … and he now knows that there is a LOT OF WORK – VELIKO DELA at every farm, every day.
Dave doesn't have to go to the KIDS PARTY – OTROŠKA ZABAVA, or the THEATRE – GLEDALIŠČE. I'm not sure he was that keen on going anyway but, unfortunately, he does have to work on Saturday morning. There's INVENTURA or a STOCK TAKE at the bar. He'll have TO COUNT - PREŠTETI a lot of things. They also have to do some VZDRŽEVANJE or MAINTENANCE. He might have to use a PAINTBRUSH - ČOPIČ, or a HAMMER AND NAILS – KLADIVO IN ŽEBLJE. Let's just hope that the boss doesn't ask him to climb any LADDERS – LESTEV or LOJTRA, and that they get everything done quickly so that Dave can relax for the rest of the weekend!
SPRING JE TUKAJ – POMLAD IS HERE and it’s time for SPRING CLEANING – SPOMLADANSKO ČIŠČENJE. Fani has made plans for them … They will WASH THE BEDDING – OPRALA POSTELJNINO, AIR THE PILLOWS - PREZRAČILA VZGLAVNIKE and the BLANKETS – ODEJE. They also need to do some DUSTING – BRISANJE PRAHU, VACUUMING – SESANJE and MOP THE FLOOR – BRISATI TAL. And while Dave still can’t wake up, he’s probably having SPRING TIREDNESS – SPOMLADANSKA UTRUJENOST.
Today Dave learned a very important lesson for life – not to play a VIDEO GAME – VIDEO IGRICA on your COMPUTER – RAČUNALNIK in the presence of your girlfriend, unless you want to be single… Fani didn’t find it amusing at all. She thought Dave is ADDICTED - ZASVOJEN with playing video games. She also didn’t like the fact that the game was about an ASSASSIN – PLAČAN MORILEC. So in the end Dave had to DELETE or IZBRISATI the game…
